Kindling Solitude

November 23 + November 24

For introverts, the modern hermit, and the playfully curious. Kindling Solitude is a weekend dedicated to slowing down, landing in your home, and learning to find the joys of being alone.

Kindling Solitude is for you if …

  • You avoid spending time alone because that’s when feelings of loneliness arrive

  • Carving out dedicated time in your home for journalling, playing, and being present never quite makes it to the top of your list.

  • You’re excited (and nervous!) to see what emerges when you stop scrolling, turn the podcast off, and let your inner world unfold

You know that without a pause, you won’t find the balance you want – introversion and extroversion, deep relationships with your loves and honest connection with yourself, chaos and peace .

Love notes from previous kindling solitude sojourners:

“I've been working on trying to play again for over a decade now. This was one of the rare times so far that I actually got there without transforming play into work.” - Alodie

“I greatly enjoyed having dedicated and focused time for self-connection and self-exploration while being simultaneously grounded in a warm and welcoming community space.”  - Kindling Solitude Participant

What we’re most excited for?

Shifting your beliefs and offering you a new paradigm about what it means to sit in solitude. We’re always surprised and delighted at what’s possible for people when solitude becomes a ritual, a space of play and a site for exploration.

“I have enduring gratitude for the space this retreat gave me to sink into exactly where I am, where I need to be, and the strength found to keep going.  It’s remarkable what the facilitators were able to encourage and frame in an online format in such a short time.  What a wonderful low barrier way of getting out of the average everydayness.  Even here there are stars. Thank you to everyone who shared deeply of their time and presence.  I look forward to more.”

Turn on your mood lighting, pour a cup of tea and start to slow down.

One evening and one morning together, live, online.

As we explore the gentle ways that solitude can hold us, you’ll start to notice the space around you and inside of you with fresh eyes. Thoughts, feelings, fears, longings emerge and you welcome them.

Your inner world becomes a rich playground, a space for you to delight in, curiously explore, and celebrate.

You finally feel the flicker of who you are when all the noises and distractions fall away.

✺ Frequently asked questions ✺

  • lol, we get you.

With Emberwood, feel free to have your screen off the whole time, in ‘podcast mode.’

There’s no pressure to share, there are no breakout rooms.

We have had great feedback that we create a unique online space, it will feel very different than any online group thing you’ve attended before.

  • Most of our participants are 2SLGBTQIA+, however, allies are totally welcome - we find it's more about an outlook on life, whether you're straight, bi, disabled, BIPOC, or neurodivergent - Emberwood really vibes with all people who like to trust their intuition, think outside the cultural norm, love learning deeply about themselves, and find meaning in the world.

If you like scientifically-backed woo-woo, come on down.

  • Payment plans available by email request. Many people pay with a payment plan.

Note we also take insurance plans if your plan covers a registered social worker. If you have a personal spending account, that fits too.

  • This is our speciality.

You can think of it more as a silent retreat, or ‘public solitude’ - we are alone together.

During Kindling Solitude you’ll also have lots of time and space outside of formal workshop blocks to explore the practices you’ve learned by yourself.

Your screen might be on, if you wish, with others nearby trying the same practices.

  • No problem - this offering designed for those new to these practices. Very few people make time for intensional solitude these days (well monks, I suppose, and lots of people historically).

This is about learning all about it, and then trying it out for yourself.

There are no prerequisites. You’re good to go!

  • You don’t need anything in particular other than Zoom, journal or notepaper, candle & matches, and you might like a cozy place to yourself - yoga mat, couch, bed, whathaveyou.

    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED:

    • Could other people be out of the house? Or at least out of that room?

    • And major bonus - could you even find a way to take space after the evening gathering, perhaps even through the night, and then also before the next morning’s gathering? That way you’d have a HUGE stretch of solitude, bookended by the program.

You’re in good hands

I love our online series because they are so unique and they don’t truly feel like you are online – there is a bit of magic to be present with yourself and a community of people and still getting to be grounded in your space. Some of my most meaningful experiences of solitude have happened in my own home. It’s a skill to be able to connect to yourself with all the possibility of distraction – I always feel so calm and creative after an at-home solo.

I’ve been an educator, or, more accurately for my way of thinking about educating, a creator of meaningful experiences, for nearly 2 decades now. So I’ve really honed my chops around being able to build the right tone into each event. And with Emberwood, it’s about receiving. You’ll receive from us as facilitators, you’ll receive from nature, and you’ll receive from yourself with what you learn. So often in online spaces (work meetings, social media), it’s about giving-giving-giving (fixing!), killing time, and performing. Not here. I’m thrilled that our vibe of receiving translates seamlessly to our online offerings.

See you soon!
